Phelps Sport Taekwondo is a Des Moines, IA based sport taekwondo club. We offer over 30 years of Taekwondo experience and all our instructors are WTF/Kukkiwon/USAT certified.

Our Program
Phelps TKD's program is designed to lead a student to achieve his or her personal goals. Our training program progresses a student through the various ranks up to and including Black Belt. Our Taekwondo program accommodates all levels of Taekwondo students, from the beginner to the advanced Taekwondo athlete. Phelps TKD prides itself on bringing the best out of each student while building strong character and self-discipline.

Phelps TKD offers a both Traditional and Sport Taekwondo classes:

Traditional Class
Traditional class at Phelps TKD emphasizes fundamental blocking and kicking, forms, one-step sparring, and self-defense. These classes help prepare students for rank/belt testing.

Sparring Class
Phelps TKD's Olympic style sparring class trains competitors to become champions. These classes help prepare students to compete at the State, Regional, and National level. Students go through several stages of training while building both physical and mental toughness. If you plan to compete this class is for you.

Master Phelps has over 30 years of Olympic style Taekwondo experience and has developed several State, Regional, and National champions.

Children in Taekwondo
Not only adults, but also children realize a number of benefits through the practice of Taekwondo. The children in our classes thrive in an atmosphere of physical and mental training while learning respect for parents, teachers, and elders. They learn at once the essence of the art of Taekwondo rest in their own integrity.

Accordingly the first technique that they learn is the bow of respect, by which the individual demonstrates trust in his teacher and fellow student. Another priceless benefit is that they will develop a growing sense of self-confidence that makes it easier to say no to drugs and achieve better grades.

*The minimum age for children in Taekwondo classes is 4 yrs old.

Master Phelps began Taekwondo training in 1976 under Grand Master In Mook Kim and currently holds the rank of 6th degree Black Belt. His rank is recognized by the World Taekwondo Federation, the only Taekwondo federation recognized by the International Olympic Committee.


Master Phelps has over 30 years of Olympic style Taekwondo competition experience and has developed several State, Regional and National Taekwondo champions. Master Phelps holds coaching and referee certification through USA Taekwondo (the governing body for Olympic Taekwondo in the United States). He also holds referee certification through the International Kick Boxing Federation and is currently the Vice President of the Chung Do Kwan of America Taekwondo Association, a regional Taekwondo association.
